Looks like they enjoy a sunny day in the garden too. We are starting to get our afternoon thunderstorms again, a sign of the beginning of the wet season.

You only have to experience a couple of big ones like Larry and Yasi to see that a few small things done properly can make a huge difference.

An example of poor communications: it was at least five days before we discovered that Innisfail CBD was pretty much unaffected by Yasi. Knowing that a good take-away is only a 25 minute drive when you're cooking meals on a camping stove by candlelight is pretty useful information :)

Wow a red letter day!! I am writing to you on the [and it is in my name] NEW! HP Pavilion g6 laptop. Unfortunately Phil's old Dell I was using developed very irritating fan noises, cleaning did not help. It also has a webcam but we won't be doing any Facebook stuff. You certainly are having some good visits from the wildlife. This year there has been an increase in the lorikeets feeding in the grevilleas and the callistemons , even had a pair of Scaly Breasted loris appear this year.

Yes, the only choice was to nuke it and start again. We've kept all the trees and shrubs and the rest will be lawn. We'll plant more native trees and shrubs too. Much easier to maintain and no more Roundup required.

Indeed. The cassowary plays a very important part in seed distribution in the forest.

The problem up here was well described by our local vet (probably the world's leading cassowary expert). He says there are two types: cassowaries and Mission Beach cassowaries. The latter are ones that have been fed by people and now have little fear of people, dogs and cars.

Three cassowaries have been killed by cars in the last three weeks.
